Good preparation is essential for anyone going hiking. Still, the Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Association (NKBV) sees that more and more hikers go into nature without the proper knowledge or equipment. "Especially among young people under 35, you notice that people are inspired by beautiful images on social media and think: I can do that too. But they insufficiently realize that such a trek also involves risks," warns NKBV director Robin Baks in an interview with NH News.

Well prepared for the mountains: discover all about hiking at Camping & Caravan Jaarbeurs.

The mistakes seem small, but can have big consequences: setting off on sneakers, not bringing water or underestimating how quickly the weather can turn in the mountains. "Even if it's 30 degrees, always bring a raincoat, rain pants, hat and gloves" stresses Baks. "The weather can change quickly. Mountain hiking is really something different than a trip across the Veluwe." (source: NH News).

Hike Essentials: learn from Maxime & Puck

During Camping & Caravan Jaarbeurs you will get plenty of tips on how to be safe and smart on the road. In the Kampeertheater, experienced hikers Maxime and Puck(@Over_thegreenhills) will give the interactive presentation 'Hike essentials: What to bring and how to determine your route'.

  • How to choose a nice and feasible route with tools like Komoot, Strava and classic maps.
  • What goes in the backpack? Maxime and Puck unpack their bags live and share their must-haves.
  • What practical tips will help you avoid blisters, fatigue and surprises along the way?

And there's more: during the session, one of their favorite hike-essentials will be raffled off to the audience.

Three tips for a safe hike

The NKBV (Climbing and Mountaineering Association) shares some essential advice in advance:

  1. Tell someone your plan - let them know where you're going and when you're expected back.
  2. Invest in good equipment - sturdy shoes with tread are essential, especially on steep descents.
  3. Prepare for any type of weather- bring warm and waterproof clothing, even on sunny days (source: nkbv.nl).
