The trailer is ready, the RV is packed, and the vacation is about to begin. But did you know that the way you load your camping vehicle has a major impact on safety on the road? Improper weight distribution can result in a longer braking distance, reduced driving comfort, and, in the worst case, even a swaying trailer.

Know the load capacity of your camping vehicle

Every piece of camping equipment has a maximum allowable weight. The difference between that weight and the curb weight is the payload capacity: the space left over for luggage, camping gear, clothing, bicycles, and provisions. That often seems sufficient, but as you prepare for your vacation, the weight can quickly add up.

Overloading can not only result in a fine, but more importantly, it affects traffic safety.

Heavy items? Place them low and near the center of gravity.

Proper weight distribution is essential. Place heavy luggage as low as possible and close to the center of the caravan or RV. Also, distribute the weight evenly between the left and right sides. This keeps the vehicle more stable and ensures the tires bear the load more evenly.

The drawbar box also deserves attention. It’s often used for extra storage space, but an overfilled drawbar box can lead to excessive ball pressure and also hinders necessary ventilation.

Prevent swaying while driving

A caravan or folding trailer that’s loaded incorrectly is more prone to swaying. Therefore, be mindful of the speed limit and check regularly to make sure the load is still evenly distributed.

If you notice that the trailer is starting to sway while driving, slowly reduce your speed and, at the next safe place to stop, check whether heavy items should be repositioned closer to the axle.

Check the tongue weight

Tongue weight is the weight that the trailer or folding trailer exerts on the tow hitch. The maximum allowable value is indicated on the tow hitch’s nameplate. For stable handling, it’s wise to make the best possible use of this value without exceeding the maximum.

Be mindful when packing your bikes

Bikes are popular on vacation, but they also add extra weight. Therefore, always check the weight of both the bikes and the bike rack, and make sure the bike rack is properly mounted. E-bikes, in particular, can significantly affect the ball load. So make sure you stay within the maximum allowable weights.
