The tires on a trailer, RV, or folding trailer are subjected to different stresses than those on a car. As a result, they wear differently, and while they may still look fine on the outside, the quality of the rubber may already have deteriorated significantly.
Before you set out, be sure to check the following:
- The Right Tire Pressure
- The age of the tires
- Damage or dry-weather cracks
- The load capacity of the tire
- Any bulges or deformations
Low tire pressure increases the risk of overheating and, consequently, a blowout. It also results in a longer stopping distance, a greater risk of skidding, and higher fuel consumption.
How old can a caravan’s tires be?
Many campers focus mainly on the tread depth, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. The maximum safe age for RV tires is six years. Even when there is still sufficient tread depth, the rubber can become less reliable due to aging.
That’s why it’s wise to check not only the tread wear but also the tire’s date of manufacture.
The Right Tire Pressure
For modern RVs, the recommended tire pressure is often between 2.5 and 3.0 bar. For reinforced tires, this can range from 3.5 to 4.5 bar. The exact pressure depends on the tires and the weight of the RV.
