If you’re new to the camping market, the selection of RVs, trailers, and folding trailers can be overwhelming. But don’t worry—you don’t have to make any hasty decisions. All camping equipment is available for rent, so you can make a well-informed decision afterward.

If you’ve decided you’d like to buy a camper, the choices are endless: from alcove campers to maneuverable campervans, and from bunk beds to queen-size beds, fold-down beds, and transverse beds. Visiting dealers, browsing trade shows, checking out every model: once you’ve made your choice, how do you know if it will actually suit your situation and expectations in real life? There’s a simple solution: rent it! So before you make a final decision to make a major purchase, you’re essentially booking a very long test drive first. And not just a quick spin around the block to see if the camper drives well, but a trip through Europe with your partner or the whole family.

Supply and Demand

The exact same applies to caravans and folding trailers, because there’s something for everyone when it comes to these types of camping gear, too. In terms of size, layout, weight, and you name it. Virtually every dealer of the well-known brands offers the option to rent a motorhome, folding trailer, or caravan. But there are a few things you should keep in mind. First of all: as you know, camping is more popular than ever, which automatically means there’s high demand in the rental market, especially during school breaks. On the one hand, this results in higher prices; on the other hand, it means you have to book early, or you’ll simply miss out.

Included and Not Included

During peak periods, the rental fleet is often only available on a weekly basis, so a weekend getaway in early August is possible, but you’ll have to pay for the entire week. Outside of school vacations, however, it’s often possible to rent for just a few days. For a quick test run to a nearby campground, that can be the perfect solution. Typically, the rental caravans, folding trailers, and RVs come equipped with basic amenities so you can cook on board and enjoy sitting outside. This includes pots and pans, dishes and cutlery, camping chairs, and a table. Be sure to ask specifically what isn’t included in the RV and what you think you’ll need during your trip, because you’ll have to bring those items yourself. In most cases, you’re responsible for providing your own bedding and dish towels, for example.

Miles and Insurance

Also, check whether the rental agreement specifies a maximum number of kilometers you’re allowed to drive in a motorhome (this doesn’t apply to folding trailers or caravans, of course). If you exceed that limit during your trip, you’ll have to pay extra per kilometer, since that mileage naturally affects the camper’s depreciation. Also check what kind of insurance coverage you have as a renter. The caravan or folding trailer is automatically covered under your car’s liability insurance, but what about other types of damage? And how high is the deductible? So the fine print is important, but ultimately, a vacation with a rented camping vehicle does give you a very good idea of what to expect if you were to eventually buy one yourself. At Kampeer & Caravan Jaarbeurs , you’ll also find various exhibitors who can inform you about the options for renting!
