Smarter Use of Space in Campervans
In a campervan, every centimeter counts. Adding extra functionality often means sacrificing space elsewhere. That’s why, for 2027, manufacturers are coming up with smart solutions for combining sleeping and storage space.
One notable development is the electrically operated fold-down bed in the rear. Raising the bed during the day creates a lot of extra space underneath—enough, for example, to carry two bicycles or to create a spacious seating area.
More sleeping spaces and 4×4 campervans
Families are also gaining more options. In addition to the familiar pop-up roof with an extra double bed, campervans are appearing with a fold-down bed above the seating area—a solution that was previously found mainly in semi-integrated and integrated motorhomes.
At the same time, the trend toward adventure travel continues. Four-wheel-drive campervans are being equipped with features such as off-road tires, increased ground clearance, and accessories like spotlights and bull bars.
Off-grid camping is becoming more and more comprehensive
Want to stay on the road longer without relying on a power connection? Manufacturers are making their RVs increasingly suitable for off-grid camping.
This goes beyond solar panels and larger batteries. Think also of larger fresh and wastewater tanks, cooking with induction instead of gas, and diesel-powered heating. Bathrooms are also being designed more intelligently, for example with rotating and sliding walls to make optimal use of the available space. Larger RVs are increasingly offering a separate shower stall.
Weight reduction remains important
The weight of a motorhome remains a key consideration. Under current regulations, a standard Class B driver’s license allows you to drive a motorhome with a maximum authorized mass of 3,500 kilograms. For weights above that, at least a Class C1 driver’s license is required.
Camper manufacturers are therefore looking for ways to reduce weight. This applies to compact campervans as well as semi-integrated and fully integrated campers. This leaves more payload capacity for passengers, luggage, and everything else you want to bring along on your trip.
Compact Camping: Cooking and Showering Outdoors
The more compact the camper, the more creatively manufacturers use the available space. For example, in some campervans, the body is widened at the level of the rear side windows. This allows for a crosswise bed measuring 1.90 to even 2 meters long to fit inside the camper.
Is there no room inside for a full bathroom? Then an outdoor shower is the solution. Cooking is also increasingly moving outdoors. In many campervans, the kitchen can be slid out. This saves interior space and brings cooking to the place where many campers prefer to be: outdoors.
